Important update 2004-10-18: The current build of QARA only works the Beta2 versions of SQL Express. I'm working with Lloyd Sheen to get an updated version of that tool build and uploaded to the download site. If you're a QARA fan, expect this to happen going forward, too. We don't get the bits before you do, so if you install the October 2004 CTP, Beta3 or any release or RTM versions of SQL Express, expect that QARA will break and it will take Lloyd a few days to get his updates done. We regret the inconvenience, but its beyond our control. You might want to subscribe to my blog for additional announcements about QARA as well.
Due to the lack of GUI tools distributed with the first releases of SQL Server 2005 Express (download) the QA Replacement Application was created. This application does not have all the functionality of Query Analyzer but as time goes on it gets closer. QA Replacement allows the user to run scripts, create DDL from dragging objects to the editor, see the event profiler for executing T-SQL and viewing the Show Plan for query executions.
The QA Replacement Application was created by Lloyd Sheen. He is the former product manager for SQL-Programmer, a product which allowed database developers to create database objects and to test the functionality of those objects.
The QA Replacement Application is updated regularly with new functionality and fixes to problems. There are approximately 100 users (or at least that many users who have been sent a copy of the application. From this time on the application will be available as a download and users who have sent their request will be notified of new versions of the program.
The application is distributed as a zip file. To install simply extract the files to a folder. The documentation is in HTML and should be extracted to the Documentation folder under the folder in which the application resides. The documentation can be viewed from within the application.
The application uses the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 which must be installed for the application to run. Database access is thru the SQL Server native drivers so no ODBC connections strings need to be created. Simply use the name of the database server (in most cases .\SQLEXPRESS). Security can be either Windows Authentication Mode or SQL Server Authentication.
Questions about the application or problems with the application should be reported to Lloyd at sqlguy@hotmail.com.
